Objectives: The Korean liquid sound ([l]) is a late-developing speech sound with two allophonic variants: a syllable initial flap sound ([?]) and a syllable final lateral sound ([l]). Most previous research on the phoneme acquisition used meaningless speech in imitation and naming tasks. Grammatical morphemes are also an important part of the Korean language but there has been limited research on the influence of morphology on speech sound acquisition. Therefore, this research examines the acquisition and phonological patterns of the liquid sound in terms of morphological types produced in Korean-speaking children¡¯s spontaneous speech.
Methods: Data were collected from 32 children, between the ages of 3 to 4, without speech and language delay. Children were divided into 4 age groups (6 months age gaps). Spontaneous speech samples were recorded at the children¡¯s homes.
Results: The results showed that the error rates in both the flap sound and lateral sound decreased with increasing age in all morphological contexts. And, within the groups, error percentages were significantly lower in lexical morphemes than in grammatical morphemes. The deletion of lateral sounds was the main error pattern in all morphological contexts. Contrary to the lateral sounds, gliding of the flap sound was the main error pattern.
Conclusion: The acquisition of Korean liquid sound varied depending on age and morphological contexts. Additionally, error patterns varied allophonic variants. The present study provides data that can be used to identify the difficult contexts for articulatory evaluation and therapy.
